In Aztec mythology, Mictlāntēcutli, also known as Mictecacihuatl, was the god of the dead, ruling over Mictlan with her husband Mictlantecuhtli. She presided over ancient festivals of the dead, which later merged with Spanish traditions to form the modern Day of the Dead.

Mictecacihuatl's appearance varied across cultures and belief systems. In Aztec mythology, she was depicted as a fleshless body with an open jaw to swallow stars during the day. Other epithets include 'Lady of the Dead,' reflecting her role in watching over the bones of the dead.
